Unopened: 1–3 weeks past sell-by · Greek yogurt: up to 10 days after opening
Yogurt is naturally acidic, which gives it a longer shelf life than most dairy products. The live cultures in yogurt also continue to work after you open it — helping to keep harmful bacteria at bay, though not indefinitely.
Yogurt Shelf Life
| Type | Unopened (fridge) | Opened (fridge) | Freezer |
|---|---|---|---|
| Regular yogurt | 1–3 weeks past sell-by | 5–7 days | 1–2 months |
| Greek yogurt | 1–3 weeks past sell-by | 7–10 days | 1–2 months |
| Skyr (Icelandic style) | 1–3 weeks past sell-by | 7–10 days | 1–2 months |
| Flavoured yogurt (with fruit) | 1–2 weeks past sell-by | 5–7 days | 1–2 months |
| Drinkable yogurt / kefir | 1–2 weeks past sell-by | 3–5 days | 1 month |
Can Yogurt Be Eaten Past Its Expiry Date?
Yes, if it's been stored correctly and shows no signs of spoilage. Yogurt's natural acidity slows bacterial growth significantly. Unopened yogurt stored at or below 40°F (4°C) is typically safe 1–3 weeks past the printed date — the date is about peak quality, not safety.
Once opened, 5–7 days is the reliable window regardless of what date is printed on the pot.
Signs Yogurt Has Gone Bad
- Visible mould — pink, green, or black spots on the surface or sides. Discard the entire container, not just the mouldy part.
- Very sour or rancid smell — distinct from the normal pleasant tanginess of yogurt. Bad yogurt smells sharp and unpleasant.
- Extreme separation with watery, separated texture throughout — some whey separation is normal. If the entire pot has separated into solid curds and watery liquid with an off smell, discard.
- Off or bitter taste — if it passes the visual and smell test but tastes unusually bitter, stop eating it.
Can You Freeze Yogurt?
Technically yes — frozen yogurt is safe for 1–2 months. But the texture changes significantly after thawing: the proteins separate and the result is grainy and watery rather than smooth. Thawed yogurt works fine in smoothies, baking, and sauces, but is poor for eating on its own.
If you have yogurt nearing its expiry, the better use-up strategy is: smoothies, overnight oats, marinades (great for chicken), dressings, or baked goods.
